Was für Realfilme die Oscars oder Golden Globes sind, das sind im Bereich Animation die Annie Awards. Seit 1972 werden diese bereits vergeben, anfangs zur Ehrung von Individuen, die sich besonders hier hervorgetan haben. Seit 1992 werden zusätzlich auch einzelne Filme und Serien ausgezeichnet. Da die Preise von der Hollywood-Abteilung des 1960 gegründeten Association internationale du film d’animation verliehen werden, liegt der Fokus wenig überraschend auf den großen Produktionen der USA. Dass bei der am 4. Februar 2017 veranstalteten 44. Ausgabe der Annie Awards Disneys Zoomania der große Abräumer war, verwundert dann auch nicht wirklich: Elf Mal wurde das tierische Plädoyer für Toleranz nominiert, sechs Preise konnte der Film am Ende einheimsen. Für Animationsfans sind die Auszeichnungen trotz der kommerziellen Ausrichtung interessant: Nicht nur, dass ASIFA-Hollywood animierte Figuren in Realfilmen würdigt. Es werden zudem auch die besten Serien prämiert, von denen so manche hierzulande nur Geheimtippstatus haben.
