Als der unehrenhaft aus dem Militär entlassene Wes (KJ Apa) aus dem Gefängnis kommt, steht er vor der Frage, wie sein weiteres Leben aussehen soll. In der Hoffnung, noch einmal neu anfangen zu können, muss er sich jedoch seiner Vergangenheit stellen. Ausgerechnet sein entfremdeter Vater Dean (Eric Dane), der ihn und seine Mutter seinerzeit hat sitzen lassen, soll ihm helfen, wieder auf die Beine zu kommen. Schließlich war Dean als junger Mann ein erfolgreicher Motorradrennfahrer gewesen. Und eben diese Karriere möchte auch Wes einschlagen. Zu dem Zweck beginnt er eine Stelle bei Abel (Edward James Olmos), der einen Motorradladen leitet und ebenfalls eine lange Vorgeschichte mit Dean hat. Doch es ist vor allem Camila (Maia Reficco), die Wes in einem Diner kennenlernt, die sein Leben richtig auf den Kopf stellen wird …
Austauschbares Drama
Es ist schon eine abwechslungsreiche Karriere, die Kelly Blatz da bislang vorgelegt hat. Bekannt wurde er ursprünglich als Schauspieler, hatte beispielsweise die Hauptrolle in der Serie Aaron Stone. In mehreren Dutzend Filmen und Serien hat er mitgespielt. Parallel war er auch musikalisch unterwegs, nahm sowohl mit der Band Capra wie auch Solo mehrere Alben auf. Und weil ihm das offensichtlich nicht reicht, hat er vor einigen Jahren auch angefangen, selbst Regie zu führen. Jetzt ist es mal wieder so weit, mit dem exklusiv auf Amazon Prime Video veröffentlichten Drama One Fast Move legt er einen neuen Spielfilm vor. Diesen hat er nicht nur inszeniert, auch das Drehbuch stammt vom US-Amerikaner. Auf einen eigenen Auftritt hat er jedoch verzichtet, offensichtlich ging es ihm mehr um das Erzählen der Geschichte.
Das ließ einen vermuten, dass er tatsächlich etwas zu erzählen hat, das ihm am Herzen liegt. Sollte dies der Fall sein, bekommt man davon in One Fast Move aber herzlich wenig mit. Sicher, die Vorgeschichte des Protagonisten ist etwas ungewöhnlicher. Ein Soldat, der wegen illegaler Straßenrennen unehrenhaft entlassen wird und ins Gefängnis kommt? Das sieht man nun wirklich nicht alle Tage. Das war es aber auch schon mit den originellen Einfällen. Die Geschichte um den Vater, der die Familie früh verlassen hat, ist ziemlich austauschbar. Völlig überflüssig ist sogar die Figur des Love Interests. Natürlich darf sich der Protagonist auf diese Weise selbst mit dem Konzept Familie auseinandersetzen, da seine Angebetete ein Kind hat und er damit auf einmal die Rollen tauschen muss. Viel draus gemacht wird aber nicht.
Die Suche nach Orientierung
Dem Ensemble kann man dabei gar nicht so wahnsinnig viel vorwerfen. KJ Apa (I Still Believe, Songbird) ist schon engagiert in der Rolle des jungen Mannes, der in seinem Leben verloren ist und nach neuen Orientierungspunkten sucht – zwischen Rennsport, Vater und Freundin. Richtig mitreißend ist das Ergebnis aber nicht. Die anderen hinterlassen sowieso wenig Eindruck, die sind einfach nur da. Dann und wann dürfen sie zwar zu größeren emotionalen Momenten ansetzen, wenn sich etwa Dean mit seiner Verantwortung und seinen Ängsten auseinandersetzen muss. Nur ist das eben so sehr nach dem bekannten Schema gebastelt, dass One Fast Move kaum Wirkung erzielt. Es fehlt schlicht und ergreifend an einer Persönlichkeit.
Ein bisschen Abwechslung kommt natürlich durch die Rennszenen hinein, schließlich es das, womit der Protagonist sich beweisen will. Es wird auch zu dem verbindenden Mittel von Vater und Sohn, die darin eine flüchtige Gemeinsamkeit entdecken. Die Szenen sind auch ganz ordentlich geworden. Aber als Argument, sich den Film anzuschauen, reicht das nicht unbedingt. One Fast Move ist ein nur mäßiges Drama, das sich zwar einiges vorgenommen hat, an den essenziellen Stellen aber zu wenig macht. Eine Katastrophe ist das Ergebnis sicherlich nicht. Wer aber nicht gerade ein großer Fan von Apa ist, der hier auch das eine oder andere Mal sein Shirt ausziehen darf, verpasst hier nicht wirklich etwas.

A drama like many others
It’s quite a varied career that Kelly Blatz has had so far. He originally became known as an actor, for example having the leading role in the series Aaron Stone. He has appeared in several dozen films and series. At the same time, he was also musically active and recorded several albums both with the band Capra and solo. And because that’s obviously not enough for him, he started directing himself a few years ago. Now it’s that time again, with the drama One Fast Move, released exclusively on Amazon Prime Video, he is presenting a new feature film. Not only did he direct it, the script was also written by the American. However, he decided not to make his own appearance; he was obviously more interested in telling the story.
This made you think that he actually had something to say that was close to his heart. If this is the case, you won’t notice much of it in One Fast Move. Sure, the protagonist’s backstory is a little unusual. A soldier who gets a dishonorable discharge and goes to prison for illegal street racing? You really don’t see that every day. But that was it for the original ideas. The story about the father who left the family early is pretty interchangeable. Even the character of the love interest is completely unnecessary. Of course, the protagonist is allowed to deal with the concept of family himself in this way, since his girlfriend has a child and he suddenly has to swap roles. But not much is made of it.
Looking for a perspective
You can’t really blame the ensemble for that though. KJ Apa (I Still Believe, Songbird) is quite committed to the role of the young man who is lost in his life and is looking for new points of reference – between racing, father and girlfriend. But the result isn’t really exciting. The others leave little impression anyway, they’re just there. Every now and then they are allowed to have bigger emotional moments, for example when Dean has to deal with his responsibilities and his fears. It’s just that it’s based so much on the familiar formula that One Fast Move barely has any effect. There is simply a lack of personality.
Of course, a bit of variety comes in through the racing scenes, after all, that’s what the protagonist wants to prove himself with. It also becomes the connecting means between father and son, who discover a fleeting commonality in it. The scenes turned out quite well too. But that’s not necessarily enough of a reason to watch the film. One Fast Move is a mediocre drama that has a lot planned, but doesn’t do enough in the essential areas. The result is certainly not a catastrophe. But if you’re not a big fan of Apa who is allowed to take off your shirt every now and then, you’re not really missing out on anything here.
